Programs and Tickets: Men’s Lacrosse

Established as a club team 1937, but didn’t play until 1938. Competed intermittently in the Dixie Lacrosse League throughout the war years and were the Dixie Lacrosse League champions for 1941 and 1949. Elevated to varsity status in 1949 and competed in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) 1950-1954 when the varsity team was disbanded due to administrative lack of interest. Varsity lacrosse returned in1964 under Coach Conrad Steele and completed at the Division II level until 1974. The team joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1971 and had mixed success until Willie Scroggs became coach in 1979. He led the Tar Heels to 6 ACC titles, 3 NCAA championships, and 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Successive coaches have had consistent success: Dave Klarmann (1991-2000, 1 National Title), John Haus (2001-2008) & Joe Breschi (2009-present, 1 National Title).
